Prepare for Lightning - Part 1

An individual struck by lightning may suffer serious injury, or even death. Personal safety is top priority when lightning or thunder are in the area. Take shelter inside a sturdy building. Do not resume outdoor activities until thirty minutes after the lightning or thunder pass through. Stay away from doors, windows, phones, electronic equipment and plumbing until the storm passes.

Property owners can take steps to reduce the possibility of lightning damage. A professionally-installed lightning protection system uses lightning rods and a series of exterior conductors to carry excess electrical current away from the building and into the ground. Plug electrical appliances and equipment into UL-approved surge protectors to safeguard belongings from damage caused by power surges. Unplugging expensive electronics is also an option if lightning is nearby.
