Are You Prepared for an Earthquake?

Illinois is home to two major fault lines. The New Madrid Seismic Zone runs through southern Illinois and the Wabash Valley Seismic Zone is located in southeastern Illinois. In northern Illinois, geologists have identified the Sandwich Fault Line and Plum River Fault Line as potential earthquake zones as well. Earthquakes occur periodically in all four areas. Most register below 5.0 on the Richter Scale, but this may not always be the case. Residents should have a response plan should a damaging earthquake occur in the future.
