Check the vehicle's insurance identification card. Motorists are required to carry an insurance identification card in the glove box. The insurance identification card confirms the vehicle has liability coverage, and is in compliance with Illinois' mandatory insurance law. Verify you have a current insurance identification card in each vehicle.
Be familiar with your insurance policy's coverages. Choose liability limits that adequately protect your financial assets. State-required minimums may not be enough to pay for the other party's damages if you are responsible for a serious crash. Physical damage insurance on your vehicle is optional, but lenders typically require it. Consider uninsured motorist property damage (UMPD) if you opt to go without collision coverage. UMPD pays your vehicle's physical damage caused by an identified uninsured driver. Towing, rental car reimbursement, gap coverage for leased vehicles, etc. are policy add-ons.
Make sure the policy declarations page accurately reflects vehicles, coverages, and drivers. Each vehicle and the applicable insurance coverages are identified on the policy declarations page. A vehicle with 'liability only' has no physical damage protection for losses like hail, vandalism, collision, etc. In addition, not disclosing a teen driver, or other household operator, may jeopardize coverage if there is an accident.
